McDermott Installs Sarawak Gas Equipment

(Asia) Offshore Miri Project

Engineering and construction specialist McDermott International has completed transport and installation of multiple breakbulk pieces for offshore gas projects in Sarawak, Malaysia.

The Pan Malaysia Transportation and Installation Projects involved transport and installation of jackets, topsides and pipelines for the Gorek, Larak and Bakong gas fields.

"McDermott's commitment to safety resulted in 1.3 million work hours without a lost-time injury on the project," said Ian Prescott, senior vice president, Asia-Pacific at McDermott.

Pan Malaysia Transportation and Installation

As a result of the safety measures put in place by McDermott during the project, the firm was recognized as a finalist by the government in a national safety award and achieved installation of the longest corrosion-resistant alloy pipeline in Malaysia.

"The National Council for Occupational Safety and Health and the Department of Occupational Safety and Health in Malaysia recognized these results – naming McDermott as a finalist for its work on the Pan Malaysia Transportation and Installation projects,” Prescott added.

Installation for the project was carried out using McDermott's vessel, the Derrick Barge 30. The firm also built all risers and spools for the project in its fabrication facility in Batam, Indonesia.

Share and Asset Purchase

Headquartered in Texas, McDermott is one of the largest integrated onshore-offshore engineering, procurement and construction companies in the world, with operations in more than 54 countries and a workforce of more than 42,000 employees.

At the start of the year, the firm announced a restructuring program to equitize nearly all the company’s funded debt, eliminating more than US$4.6 billion of debt.

The Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings saw McDermott enter into a share and asset purchase agreement for a court-supervised sale process for its prized Lummus Technology division and delist its shares from the New York Stock Exchange.
