The Jamaica Public Service Company has signed a US$26 million contract with U.K.-based Kier Construction for engineering, construction and procurement of a new hydroelectric power plant in Maggotty, St Elizabeth.

The new 6.3-megawatt plant will be built beside a current JPS hydro plant and will be the largest hydroelectric project in Jamaica since the nation established its independence in 1962, according to the Jamaican Observer.

The new Maggotty power plant will be commissioned by November 2013.
