Siemens has awarded Harland and Wolff Heavy Industries, headquartered in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the design and build contract for two offshore substation platforms for the Gwynt y Mor farm off located off the coast of North Wales. RWE Innogy will operate the €2 billion facility.
The Gwynt y Mor offshore wind farm is a 576-megawatt, 160-turbine wind farm being developed by a consortium of RWE Innogy, SWM - Municipal Utility Munich, Germany and Siemens 13 kilometers off the coast in Liverpool Bay.
Siemens will supply the3.6-megawatt wind turbines that will be connected to two new offshore substations. The power will be transmitted back to a new onshore substation at St. Asaph, which will be built by Siemens and are scheduled to be completed by June 2012.
