German utility E.ON has received permission from the local government in Kassel to expand the Waldeck 2 pumped storage power station. It will add an additional 300 megawatts of storage capacity to the hydroelectric plant.
A cavern will be constructed to house a new underground power station and storage pump turbine, according to a company statement. The new generator will allow for the plant to respond to changes in the flow of water along the Edersee in central Germany.
E.ON plans to spend US$362 million on the expansion in 2012.
