Portland Breakbulk Surges 155 Percent

Breakbulk at the Port of Portland, Ore., which includes steel and steel rail, rose from under 19,000 tons in July of 2009 to 109,347 tons in July of this year. Breakbulk volumes for January through July reached just over 572,000 tons, a 155 percent increase over the same period of 2009, according to local news sources. 

Auto imports have rebounded as well. The port handled 32,000 units in July, more than double the imports of July 2009.

Total cargo tonnage at Portland was 936,713 tons, bringing the year-to-date total up to 7.5 million tons, 42 percent ahead of this time last year.
