Stainless steel coils delivered to the Port of Mobile, Ala., in June were barged to ThyssenKrupp’s project site terminal Friday to be used during hot commissioning, or testing, of the German steel giant’s new steel mill’s cold rolling works. A second load of steel coils now underway from ThysskenKrupp’s stainless facilities in Krefeld, Germany will arrive in Mobile in mid-August.
The US$4.65 billion steel mill at Calvert, Ala., will include a stainless steel operation and a carbon steel mill and will eventually process slabs from a multi-billion ThyssenKrupp mill being built on Sepetiba Bay in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The economic downturn has forced construction delays at both sites.
