The Port of Rotterdam Authority has signed an agreement with engineering joint venture PUMA for the construction of the Rotterdam Offshore Center Maasvlakte 2.
The PUMA, or Projectorganisatie Uitbreiding Maasvlakte, is a joint venture between Dutch engineering firm Boskalis Westminster and Van Oord. It will begin work on the first phase of construction at the site.
The 70-hectare site will be built at Prinses Alexiahaven and will handle breakbulk cargo for offshore projects. It is scheduled to become operational within two years.
It will be the first offshore center in Europe and will feature 1,600 meters of deepsea quays to handle a range of outsized shipments.
