Volga-Dnepr Used to Deliver Aid to Pakistan

Breakbulk Online - Press Release

The German Ministry of Defence has dispatched 94 metric tons of urgently needed relief supplies to Islamabad to help victims of the devastating floods in Pakistan.

The humanitarian aid shipment left Leipzig Airport in Germany on Aug. 27 onboard a Volga-Dnepr Airlines’ AN-124-100 freighter and arrived in Islamabad the next day. The cargo included 50 power generators, three water tanks and 18,000 kilos of children’s food.

So far the Pakistan floods have claimed over 1,500 lives and directly affected over 17 million people. Over one million homes have been destroyed in the disaster, which began in the mountainous northwest some four weeks ago with the onset of monsoon rains. The flood has since moved slowly down the country towards the southern coast.

The United Nations, the Pakistani army and a host of other local and international relief groups have been rushing relief supplies such as medicine, food and water to the affected regions. Financial donations and humanitarian aid are pouring into Pakistan from all over the world.

Initial estimates put the total cost of the damage across the country at anywhere between $25 billion and $40 billion.
