SAL Delivers Monopiles to Walney Offshore

Hamburg-based carrier SAL recently finished delivering cargo bound for the Walney Offshore wind project over 11 consecutive voyages between Rostock, Germany and Barrow in Furness, U.K.

SAL’s Annette, a high speed heavy-cargo vessel equipped with two 350-metric ton cranes and one 250-metric ton crane, transported a total of 51 monopiles, part of the foundation installation for the Walney project. With a high speed of 20 knots the vessel made the roundtrip between Germany and the U.K. within 10 days.

Walney Offshore Project is a joint venture between Scottish and Southern Energy and DONG Energy. Situated in the Irish Sea, Walney Windfarms is being constructed in two phases, each with 51 turbines, resulting in an overall capacity of 183.6 megawatts when the project is complete at the end of 2011.
