The first of six Siemens’ gas turbines has arrived in the U.S. for Florida Power & Light’s project to modernize the Cape Canaveral Next Generation and Rivera Beach Clean Energy Centers. Each plant will use three 274-megawatt turbines.
The 304-ton next-generation turbine was manufactured in Germany and recently traveled to the U.S. on Jumbo Shipping’s Stellaprina. The turbine, measuring 11.03 meters long, 4.88 meters wid and 4.69 meters tall, was loaded at the Port of Rotterdam onto the 7,580-deadweight-ton heavy-lift vessel.
In the near future, these turbines will be manufactured in the U.S. in Siemens' newly expanded production facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, according to a company statement.
The modernized plants will return to service in 2013 and 2014, replacing the existing 1960s era gas- and oil-fired units.
