Glacier Escorts Rig Around Cape

Breakbulk Online - News Story

Fairmount Marine’s tug Fairmount Glacier has successfully assisted the newbuild semi-submersible drilling rig Scarbeo 9 sailing around the Cape of Good Hope. Fairmount was contracted by Italy’s Saipem Energies.

Fairmount Glacier sailed toward a rendezvous location offshore South Africa where she met with Scarabeo 9 and escorted her safely around the Cape of Good Hope, according to a statement from the Netherlands-based ocean towage and heavy-lift specialist. Despite the bad weather encountered during the route, the convoy proceeded at an average speed of between 4.5 to 5.0 knots.

The semi-submersible drilling rig Scarabeo 9 has a length of 115 meters, a width of 80 meters and a depth of 35 meters from keel to main deck. It was built by Keppel FELS in its Singapore shipyard. After clearing the South African coast, the Fairmount Glacier returned to Cape Town.
