Westinghouse Electric Company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with DBD Nuclear to bring the AP1000 nuclear reactor to the U.K. The agreement provides support through the final stages of the U.K.’s Generic Design Assessment process, site-specific licensing, planning support and associated safety-case development.
The AP1000 reactor is one of two designs currently being evaluated for use in the U.K., according to a Westinghouse statement. The other design is the EPR or European Pressurized Reactor, developed by Areva. Both reactor designs are undergoing Generic Design Assessment by the Health and Safety Executive.
The U.K. government has nominated Bradwell, Braystones, Hartlepool, Hinkley Point, Heysham, Kirksanton, Oldbury, Sellafield, Sizewell and Wylfa as sites for potential nuclear power plant development. The new reactors are expected to be up and running by the end of 2025, according to the HSE.
