Bulk carrier ESL Shipping has launched the world’s first handysize vessel to be fuelled by LNG.
The Viikki was launched at the Jinling shipyard in Nanjing, China, and the firm estimates that it will cut emissions of carbon dioxide by 50 percent compared to traditional handysize designs. ESL called the ship a “forerunner in energy efficiency and eco-friendliness.” The Viikki measures 160 meters in length and weighs 26,000 deadweight tonnes.
“There is still a lot of work ahead before her delivery, but I’m confident that we will get a superb vessel tailored to our needs,” Capt. Jussi Vaahtikari.
ESL Shipping is subsidiary of Aspo and provides breakbulk transport of steel, energy and chemical industry products year round in the Baltic region in difficult ice and weather conditions. The company’s fleet consists of 14 units.
