Shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group has acquired a majority shareholding in Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries, expanding its presence in Romania.
The firm purchased the stake from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering as part of a strategic expansion of its shipyard portfolio. The move will add capacity for ship repair activities as well as international shipbuilding for new breakbulk vessels. It complements Damen’s nearby facility in Galati on the banks of the River Danube.
“With the Mangalia shipyard, Damen will have its two largest shipyards in close proximity to one another … The yard’s shipbuilding expertise and closely managed supply chain have been behind some of Damen’s most important deliveries to date, fully representing the group’s diverse product portfolio,” a spokesperson for Damen said.
Damen Shipyards Group operates 32 shipbuilding and repair yards worldwide. The firm is headquartered in Nijkerk, in the Netherlands, and employs about 9,000 people globally to deliver around 180 vessels annually.
