The shipping market and the global economy are siblings that cannot be understood separately. Trade, energy, GDP growth and containerization shape and drive developments in the general cargo, ro-ro and heavy-lift fleet. Economist Niklas Bengtsson (maritime-insight), who, along with his business partner, developed Lloyd’s Register – Fairplays research unit and now consults on maritime issues globally, will delve into these issues and share his economic and industry forecast, including a forecast for developments in these fleets.

Middle Eastern countries are rapidly diversifying their economies to maintain regional stability and ensure growth. Beyond massive investments in rail, highways, airports and other public and commercial works, many countries are developing industrial production for the first time. Lehovd details the reasons why this is happening and the enormous opportunities being created for project contractors, logistics providers and shipping lines.

Executive Presentation 5: Project Cargo Case Study — Running the Wisla River
Location: Executive Presentations Suite, Antwerp Expo, Exhibition Hall 3

Local expertise, unconventional thinking and thorough engineering were essential to transporting equipment critical to the erection of PKN Orlen Combine Cycle Power Plant in Wloclawek, Poland. The unregulated Wisla river is the main heavy cargo artery into Poland’s midland, but suitable navigation periods are limited and barges and pontoons hard to find. During exceptionally dry spring weather — which multiplied transport challenges — GE and Instar teams had to secure transport of a 300 tons gas turbine, 280 tons generator and 15 HRSG modules of 150 to 200 tons. Despite abnormally low water levels, all components were delivered on the target schedule.

Odile Dehu, Logistics Project Manager, GE Power Generation Product Customer Projects
