Port Arthur Named Strategic Seaport

November 18, 2009

The Port of Port Arthur, Tex., has been named a U.S. strategic seaport by the U.S. Army’s Military Surface and Distribution Command, a title likely to steer more military shipments to its docks. Port Arthur already handles overflow military cargo from the nearby Port of Beaumont, where the headquarters of the 842nd Transportation Battalion are located.

Beaumont handled approximately 147,000 tons of military equipment including breakbulk and roll on, roll off cargo during the last fiscal year, according to local news sources. The new designation means that Port Arthur can receive military vessels directly as well as handling overflow cargo, new sources said.

In addition to Beaumont, the Port of Corpus Christi, Tex., is also a strategic military port.
