Partner Sought for Pinto Island Steel Terminal

November 13, 2009

The Alabama State Port Authority is looking for a partner to lease and operate its new $100 million Pinto Island Steel Terminal. The $100 million terminal should be finished by the end of 2009 and is already committed to handling inbound breakbulk steel slabs for the ThyssenKrupp Steel USA plant that will open north of the port in early 2010. TK will use about 80 percent of Pinto Island’s storage space; the remaining 20 percent will be available for public use

Pinto Terminal is designed to handle steel using three cranes equipped with electro-permanent magnets. The cranes can also handle electro-hydraulic buckets or grapples and are designed to transfer cargo from ships onto barges which sit in a dockside slip and are moved using an automated pulley system. Dock draft is 45 feet. The qualifying partner will lease the facility and perform daily operations, handle staffing and maintain equipment.

“This is a unique terminal and ASPA is looking for the right partner to help us grow this portion of our business,” Jimmy Lyons, director and CEO of ASPA, said in a statement issued by the port. A copy of the port’s request for proposals for Pinto Island Terminal is available on the notice section of ASPA’s website at www.asdd.com.
