China and Russia are reported to be collaborating on the design of a new civil heavy-lift helicopter capable of transporting breakbulk cargoes up to 15 tonnes.
The agreement follows a similar deal signed between Russian Helicopters and Aviation Industry Corp. of China, or AVIC, in May.
“This is going to be a brand new helicopter specifically tailored for the Chinese market and designed to perform in a variety of roles – transportation, evacuation, firefighting … The helicopter will be able to operate both during the day and at night and in any weather conditions,” Sergei Popov, chief designer at the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant, said in comments to news agency Sputnik.
The helicopter is expected to have take-off weight of 38.4 to 40.9 tonnes and payload of 10 to 15 tonnes. The first test flight of the new helicopter is scheduled for 2020, with full certification by 2024.
