Spliethoff Acquires Five More Hansa Vessels

Further Vessels Purchased from Bankrupt Operator

Project cargo shipping line Spliethoff has acquired a further five multipurpose vessels from erstwhile operator Hansa Heavy-Lift.

The agreement will see Spliethoff take control of the HHL Richards Bay, HHL Fremantle, HHL Kobe, HHL Tokyo, HHL Lagos and the HHL Rio de Janeiro. This latest deal follows the acquisition of five vessels from Hansa in January.

Hansa Heavy-Lift went bankrupt at the end of last year, citing the "extremely challenging operating environment" as a key driver for the collapse. Reports suggested that repair costs for the firm’s heavy-lift fleet also added significant costs.

Headquartered in Amsterdam, Spliethoff operates a fleet of about 50 Dutch-flagged, 1A ice-classed, multipurpose vessels, ranging from 12,000 to 23,000 deadweight tonnes.
